Achievements
Armstrong and his mentor, David Scott were put to the test when they went to test flight into space called the Gemini VIII on March 16, 1966.
They both landed in the Pacific Ocean. But on July 16, Michael Collins and Edwin Buzz were about to make history; the commander of the trip, Armstrong was racing against Russia to get to the moon. On July 20th 1969 Armstrong successfully landed on the moon at 10:34 P.M. Armstrong defied gravity when he stepped on the moon; “when he took one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. America watched in awe as Armstrong planted an American
flag into the moon. On July 24, 1969, the Apollo 11 landed safely on Americana ground. The crowds cheered and roared when they saw the arrival of the heroes. Armstrong was given awards, including the Medal of Freedom and the congressional space Medal of Honor. After Armstrong successfully traveled to the moon, he stayed and kept working for NASA as a deputy astronaut administer until he resigned in 1971.
